Refurbishment of the Foxglove Apothecary is under way and I'll soon be inviting you to come and see me in the updated clinic space. Its been a bit cramped around here so I want to thank my loyal customers who've visited during the past months. The plans are ongoing as work on building the brand new Apothecary will begin in the summer but in the meantime my clinic space is having a transformation which will see us through until the garden clinic's ready.
I hope you'll come along and visit me soon.
Peace and love,
Things have been quiet here for a while we were concentrating on moving house, which of course meant finding a new home for the Foxglove Apothecary. I'm very excited to say that we have a new location which incorporates my temporary clinic while the new clinic is being built.
I'm hoping the new Apothecary will be finished by summer next year and in the meantime I have a cosy space which is open to everyone. Please contact me for appointments, Herbal Medicines and Reflexology.
During this years Herbal Medicine Week I installed myself in the Southend Library Forum Foyer from the 17th-21st June. I spoke to lots of people about what Medical Herbalists do and heard loads of interesting stories from many people.
I'd like to say thank you to everyone who took the time to come and speak to me, especially those of you who came especially to make contact. And thanks as well to The National Institute of Medical Herbalists who leant me their wonderful new banners, they looked amazing.
I hope that many of the people who did come and speak to me or took information away when I wasn't able to be there found it useful and interesting. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further queries or questions.
As an alternative to chocolate and sugar.. treat your loved one to a healthy alternative! I'm offering the Foxglove Teatox pack at a special price of £25 for the 2 week teatox pack.
Its vegan, dairy free and a healthy alternative if you want to give something to someone who won't want easter eggs..
I have some new teas in stock, including this years Hayfever blend. Tried and tested for those people who suffer when the pollen gets high, I recommend that you begin drinking your anti hay fever tea before your season starts and make sure you drink it regularly.
If you would like to try this tea let me know. It costs £5 per 50g.
I can send teas directly to you.
There is also new stock of the Morning Tea. Many of the people who did a Two Week Teatox found this beneficial and have continued to drink this as their wake up tea.
Its contains herbs to keep your bowels healthy, anti-oxidants and siberian ginseng to help set you up for the day. This tea weighs more as it contains dandelion & burdock roots so you need to infuse it properly. It is £10 per 100g packet.
If you would like any of my teas or want one a tailored blend please contact me, all my details are on the contact page. I can send teas to you or you can come to The Foxglove Apothecary to get yours and stop for a free taster cup of another blend if you have time!
Spring is in the air and for many this means that Hayfever season is also approaching! This welcome and glorious time of year can be the beginning of uncomfortable symptoms for Hayfever sufferers who often need antihistamines to control itching, sneezing, ticking throats, blocked sinuses and much more, however herbs can greatly help symptoms and give welcome relief.
People are often allergic to different types of pollen and so symptoms can come on at different times, I always advise people to begin taking herbal teas or tinctures 1-2 months before their own 'season' begins. This gives time to allow the herbs to get working.
The herbal approach includes nourishing the delicate tissues and membranes within the respiratory system, boosting immunity, tackling allergy and blood cleansing. Herbal therapeutics are applied to enhance the bodies natural defence rather than suppressing inflammation pathways.
I am working on some blends of tea for Hayfever which will be available in the next couple of weeks so watch this space! Please contact me if you would like a full or mini consultation for a personalised blend of tincture for Hayfever or Allergies.
The first batch of Teatox are all gone and there are more coming soon.
Let me know if you'd like to pre-order or have any Tea questions.
All details of the Teatox are below, along with the enquiry form.
Now that the Christmas chocolates have been finished off its time to give
our bodies a little break! I've put together a Herbal Tea programme
for you to do for 2 weeks in order to cleanse, detox and purify
The Two Week Teatox can be part of your normal routine
or you can work it into a more vigorous detox or
diet plan if you want to achieve more profound results
This is not a diet programme and there are no sins so if you still need that morning cup
of coffee or your evening beverage you can.. but your cleanse will be better if you stick
to the teas as much as possible. You're in control so the extent of your body flush is up
to you, I do however reccommend that you try the two week complete replacement for maximum results! If you want to use the Teatox as part of a diet you may be planning
or undertaking I can discuss this with you personally.
Two Week Teatox Plan
You will be given a supply of three different blends of Herbal Tea, along with a
tea strainer and instructions. The aim is that you replace as many of your usual brews and cold drinks throughout the day and evening and try to incorporate six cups of tea each day. You should aim to drink two cups of each blend but you can substitute one with another according to taste.
The Teatox pack costs £32.99 and consists of 3 packages of pre-blended
Herbal Teas using the best dried Herbal Tea available, one tea strainer and
guided instructions on how to follow the teatox recommended plan.
This blend is to help get you going in the morning. It will help you wake up and begin elimination of the toxins and waste that your body has been processing overnight. It contains a mild stimulant to wake you up and kick start your metabolism.
This tea is designed to help to prime the digestive system and improve kidney function.
Digestion is supported and enhanced while symptoms of wind or bloating can be eased. It also gently flushes the kidneys and helps with elimination. This can be drunk before during or after mealtimes.

Psoriasis Awareness Week 2016
The NIMH supports Psoriasis Awareness Week 2016
Members of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists will be participating in Psoriasis Awareness Week Saturday
29th October – Saturday 5th November.
Psoriasis Association’s campaign ‘PsoriasIS' encourages people to share their experience of psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis. NIMH members have experience of people seeking herbal medicines to
manage their symptoms.
Many people explore complementary therapies to manage chronic skin conditions. One study showed 62% of 578 psoriatic patients used complementary therapies, with herbal medicine ranked highest (note1). Medical Herbalists offer expertise in the safe use of herbal medicine and can provide diet and lifestyle advice to those seeking to proactively manage their health and wellbeing.
Psoriasis affects 1 in 50 people, usually starting in early adulthood. This chronic inflammatory skin condition typically develops in patches or plaques of red, scaly skin appearing on elbows, knees, scalp or lower back, which can make some people feel embarrassed about showing their skin and cause them to lose self-confidence. Flare- ups can be triggered by stress, smoking, scratched or sunburnt skin, hormonal changes and alcohol.
Herbalists have access to a wide range of plant medicines they can use to alleviate the discomfort psoriasis causes. Some people find that the symptoms can be reduced by making dietary changes and medical herbalists can also assist in creating personal dietary plans. When creating a formula for the individual, your herbalist may include one of following herbs which have been traditionally used to help manage psoriasis:
Oregon grape (Mahonia/ Berberis aquifolium) extract was found to inhibit the growth of keratinocytes by 50% in vitro (note2). This can be a useful herb to manage the condition as people with psoriasis have a faster than normal turnover of skin cells in the top layer of the skin. NB. Oregon grape is not suitable in pregnancy.
Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) flowers contain 1-2% essential oil which has anti- inflammatory properties, and a study on human volunteers found it can penetrate below the skin’s surface into the deeper skin layers which is important for its use as a topical anti-inflammatory (note 3).
Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis) cream was compared to a placebo in a double-blind, placebo controlled study of 60 patients with slight to moderate psoriasis. After 4 weeks, the aloe vera cream showed significantly higher rates of clearing the psoriatic plaques in 25/30 (83%) patients compared to 2/30 (6%) in the placebo group (note 4).

Medical herbalists tailor herbal prescriptions, diet and lifestyle advice, to meet the needs of individuals. When taking herbs, the NIMH always recommends seeking the advice of a qualified medical herbalist. Your nearest NIMH herbalist can be found here: http://www.nimh.org.uk/?page_id=1627
